This workshop will serve as an introduction to the Grad Lab's Riso equipment and workflows and give a general overview of the Riso printing process and how it differs from other printing technology. This will include discussing the available computer platforms that can support our VR hardware and additionally how to set up and use the Lab’s equipment. Friday Oct. 13th 3:30pm - 6:30pm Steadicam

When removed from a tripod, a camera traditionally has to be wheeled about on a dolly because a hand-held camera gives a shaky 'wedding photography' look that is unlike how we perceive the world. The idea behind Steadicam is to produce smoother shots by decoupling the camera from the operator’s body. This workshop will introduce you to the Steadicam Zephyr by demonstrating the correct usage and balancing of the Vest, Arm and Sled.

No experience necessary.

This is a great workshop for anyone interested in adding sensors, lights, or sound to their artwork. It is also an important preamble to our Physical Interface workshop. Whether you're just curious or really ready to get started this is a great intro to electronics basics.

Who says your artwork has to sit still and be unresponsive to viewers? This workshop will introduce students to microcontrollers, a small computer you can use to detect motion, heat, light touch and many other things. These devices can also allow you to control movement and talk to more traditional computers to control video, sound or whatever else you would like. In particular we will look at the Arduino microcontroller.

We will also discuss how lighting affects every aspect of your shot, from depth of field to shutter speed, and how tools like light meters aren't as outdated as you might think. If you have shot grainy, flat-looking images in the past and are looking to avoid that in the future, this will help.

Cinematic Shooting

This workshop will introduce students to the cameras and accessories the Grad Lab has to support cinematic shooting. We will cover 5D cinema accessories the URSA and URSA Mini. The URSA is built to handle the ergonomics of large film crews as well as single person use through multiple “workstations” that are built into it’s design which enable every part of the crew to utilize different camera features. This workshop will introduce you to the URSA and discuss some of the particulars to both the camera and the workflow it's footage requires.

Who says your artwork has to sit still and be unresponsive to viewers? This workshop will introduce students to microcontrollers, a small computer you can use to detect, motion, heat, light touch and many other things. These devices can also allow you to control movement and talk to more traditional computers to control video, sound or whatever else you would like. In particular we will look at the Arduino microcontroller.

When removed from a tripod, a camera traditionally has to be wheeled about on a dolly because a hand-held camera gives a shaky 'wedding photography' look that is unlike how we perceive the world. The idea behind Steadicam is to produce smoother shots by decoupling the camera from the operator’s body. This workshop will introduce you to the Steadicam Zephyr by demonstrating the correct usage and balancing of the Vest, Arm and Sled.

If you have shot grainy, flat-looking images in the past and are looking to avoid that in the future, this will help.

While a camera like the 5D can shoot decent video on its own there are a number of accessories that help elevate the quality and function of a DSLR to shoot video. The URSA is Black Magic’s flag ship video camera designed to shoot UHD, HD and 4K(almost) footage in a number of formats including RAW. The URSA is built to handle the ergonomics of large film crews as well as single person use through multiple “workstations” that are built into it’s design which enable every part of the crew to utilize different camera features. This workshop will introduce you to the URSA and discuss some of the particulars to both the camera and the workflow it's footage requires.

When removed from a tripod, a camera traditionally has to be wheeled about on a dolly because a hand-held camera gives a shaky 'wedding photography' look that is unlike how we perceive the world. The idea behind Steadicam is to produce smoother shots by decoupling the camera from the operator’s body. This workshop will introduce you to the Steadicam Zephyr by demonstrating the correct usage and balancing of the Vest, Arm and Sled.

Ever wonder how to get more than one video playing back over the same projector? How about syncing multiple projectors together? Or masking a projection so that images are only cast into certain surfaces within the projectors throw. Well you are in luck! This workshop will introduce you to the basics of a projection mapping software called Mad Mapper.

This workshop will introduce students to microcontrollers, a small computer you can use to detect, motion, heat, light touch and many other things. These devices can also allow you to control movement and talk to more traditional computers to control video, sound or whatever else you would like. In particular we will look at the Arduino microcontroller.

Anyone who has worked with video knows that it can be a deceptively complex medium. Some times it seems like no matter how carful you are some where between shooting and editing your footage you loose quality or introduce pesky glitches. This workshop will cover some of the more technical and esoteric aspects of working with video such as Codecs, file formats, workflows and delivery media that will help you overcome these issues.

Sept. 8th 2011 What is HD? 

Many manufactures only make HD equipment now. We will take a look at the details of this new media format, cover the details of using the labs HD equipment and cover the complications of using this memory intensive video.

Sept. 15th 2011 Studio Lighting

This workshop will serve as an introduction to lighting concepts and practices, from basic lighting schemes to more scientific ideas like color temperature and the use of gels. We will also discuss how lighting effects every aspect of your shot, from depth of field to shutter speed, and how tools like light meters aren't as outdated as you might think. If you have shot grainy, flat-looking images in the past and are looking to avoid that in the future, this will help.

From Mini DV to HD come take a look at the different cameras available for checkout and learn how they differ from one another. This workshop will cover the basics of shooting video and introduce students to the different formats and cameras available for use through the Grad Lab.

This workshop will cover constant light sources and professional studio flash equipment. With emphasis on photographing 2D and 3D art work. The workshop will also cover the use off slide film and digital cameras in the studio environment. Feel free to bring some of your work with you to be photographed during the workshop.  No large works and one work per person.

This workshop will be a short introduction to using electronics in art. This is a great workshop for anyone interested in adding sensors, lights, or sound to their artwork. This workshop will cover the basics of Maya. Maya is one of the premier 3D modeling software programs available and the Grad Lab just happens to have a copy available for you to use. How hard is it to use? What can I use it for? How cool do its animations look? Come to the workshop to have these questions and more answered fist hand.

Who says your artwork has to sit still and be unresponsive to viewers? This workshop will introduce students to microcontrollers, a small computer you can use to detect, motion, heat, light touch and many other things. These devices can also allow you to control movement and talk to more traditional computers to control video, sound or whatever else you would like. In particular we will look at the Arduino microcontroller.

We will learn how to use this software to create motion graphics, such as shapes and text. We will learn how to import video & still images into AfterEffects, how to blend all of the above together using layers & masks, and how to make a movie. This is an introductory level workshop, to show how one might integrate AfterEffect into their other video and motion work.

Feb. 19 Authoring DVDs This workshop will take a look at Apple's DVD Studio Pro. The process of creating a DVD can be a bit confusing. Its not quite like a webpage, its not quite like Final Cut. We will cover the basics of making simple self-playing looping DVDs to more advanced menu based DVDs. Kelly Egan

Mar. 5 Creating a (almost) FREE media workstation Once you have bought your expensive computer there is still all that expensive software to buy. This workshop will take a look at the vast amount of open source software available. We look at a number of open source projects including versions of the Linux Operating system specifically designed for media artists. How do you set all this up? What do you need?
